Geert-Wilders on the Koran

A right-wing Dutch politician Geert-Wilders has been told that he may have to leave the country if he releases his film about Islam, reports say.

In the past, Mr Wilders has said the Qur'an (Koran) is incompatible with Dutch values. Mr Wilders has said his film will show how the Qur'an is "an inspiration for intolerance".

The exact content of the 10-minute film is not yet known, but Mr Wilders says he will screen it on the internet if he cannot find a broadcaster.

Pakistan's Shia-Sunni divide

Zia's legacy
Most sectarian violence in Pakistan takes place in the province of Punjab and the country's commercial capital, Karachi. There have also been outbreaks in Quetta.

Musharraf is not the only leader to have such-problems. Most analysts agree it began in 1979, when Zia ul-Haq began Islamicising politics.

Performing Hajj

Yusuf Ali: For Hajj are the months well known. If any one undertakes that duty therein, Let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good ye do, (be sure) Allah knoweth it. And take a provision (With you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is right conduct.

So fear Me, o ye that are wise.

Pickthall: The pilgrimage is (in) the well-known months, and whoever is minded to perform the pilgrimage therein (let him remember that) there is (to be) no lewdness nor abuse nor angry conversation on the pilgrimage.

And whatsoever good ye do Allah knoweth it. So make provision for yourselves; for the best provision is to ward off evil.

Therefore keep your duty unto Me, O men of understanding.

Shakir: The pilgrimage is (performed in) the well-known months; so whoever determines the performance of the pilgrimage therein, there shall be no intercourse nor fornication nor quarrelling amongst one another; and whatever good you do, Allah knows it; and make provision, for surely the provision is the guarding of oneself, and be careful (of your duty) to Me, O men of understanding.

Adapting Finance to Islam

Rising oil wealth is lifting Islamic banking — banking that adheres to the laws of the Koran and its prohibition against charging interest — into the financial mainstream.

In addition to Islamic loans, there are Islamic bonds, Islamic credit cards and even Islamic derivatives.

Loans and bonds that conform to the Koran are already available in the United States. Britain, Japan and Thailand are contemplating issuing Islamic bonds.

Pickthall: And thou (Muhammad) art not occupied with any business and thou recitest not a Lecture from this (Scripture), and ye (mankind) perform no act, but We are Witness of you when ye are engaged therein.

And not an atom's weight in the earth or in the sky escapeth your Lord, nor what is less than that or greater than that, but it is (written) in a clear Book.

Shakir: And you are not (engaged) in any affair, nor do you recite concerning it any portion of the Quran, nor do you do any work but We are witnesses over you when you enter into it, and there does not lie concealed from your Lord the weight of an atom in the earth or in the heaven, nor any thing less nor greater, but it is in a clear book.

Aspects of the Days of Ignorance

The book Masaa'il-ul-Jaahiliyyah (Aspects of the Days of Ignorance) is a small treatise consisting of few pages, which is basically a summarised list of a hundred and twenty-eight points - each point representing one aspect of belief or practice that people of the Days of Ignorance were upon, which Islam came to oppose.

Text of the Book
These are the aspects that the people of the Days of Ignorance - both the people of the Book and the non-People of the Book - were upon, which the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), opposed. They are from the matters that every Muslim is required to possess knowledge of. This is since with (understanding) one side of the opposite, the goodness of the other side of the opposite can be made apparent. And it is by (making apparent the) opposite of something that matters become clarified.

The most important of these aspects (of the Days of Ignorance) and most severe in terms of danger was the absence of Faith (Iman) in the heart, for what the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), came with. And if approval for what the people of the Days of Ignorance were upon is further added to this (absence of faith), then the total ruin is achieved, as Allah says: "And those who believe in the falsehood while disbelieving in Allah, it is they who are the losers." [Al-Ankabut: 52]

They performed worship by mixing righteous people into their supplication and worship of Allah. They only did this desiring that these (righteous people) act as intercessors for them before Allah, based on their notion that Allah loved this and that these righteous people loved Him. Allah says: "And they worship besides Allah things that harm them not nor profit them, and they say: 'These are our intercessors with Allah.'" [Yunus: 18]

And He says: "And those who take associates apart from Him, (they say): 'We worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah.'" [Az-Zumar: 3]

This is the greatest of matters that the Messenger of Allah opposed them in. So he brought sincerity (i.e. doing deeds sincerely for Allah alone and not for anyone else) and informed that it was the Religion of Allah, which all the messengers were sent with. And he informed us that no deeds are accepted (by Allah), except those done sincerely (for Him alone). And he (pbuh), informed that whosoever does what these (polytheists) approved of, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him and his destination will be Hell.

It is due to this aspect that mankind becomes divided into Muslims and disbelievers. And it is due to it that enmity (between the two) occurs. And it is for this purpose that Jihad was legislated, as Allah says: "And fight them (disbelievers) until there is no more fitnah (evil/disbelief) left, and the religion is for Allah alone." [Al-Anfal: 39]

They divided into sects within their religion. Allah says: "And do not be among the polytheists-of those who split up their religion and became divided into sects - each sect rejoicing in that which it has." [Ar-Rum: 32]

They also split up into divisions with regards to their worldly affairs, and they saw that as being correct. So Allah prescribed unity and agreement in the Religion, saying:

"He has ordained for you the same religion He ordained for Noah and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad), and that which We ordained for Ibrahim, Musa and 'Isa, (saying): 'You should establish the Religion and make no divisions within it.'"
[As-Shura: 13]

And He says: Verily those who split up their religion and became sects, you have no concern with them in the least." [Al-Anaam: 159]

He has forbidden us from being similar to them, saying: "And be not like those who split up and differed after the clear signs came to them." [Al-Imran: 105]

And He has forbidden us from splitting up into sects in Religion: "And hold firmly onto the Rope of Allah, all of you together, and be not divided." [Al-Imran: 103]

The Most High

Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal.

No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth?

He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth.

His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High.

Inheritance of Power

Allah has promised, to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He* will, of a surety, grant them in the land, inheritance, as He granted it to those before them; That He will establish in authority Their religion - the one which He has chosen for them; And that He will change (Their state), after the fear** which they (lived), to one of security:

'They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me.'

If any do reject faith after this, they are rebellious and wicked.

* Three things are promised here, to those who have faith:

(1) They will inherit authority on the land, not for any selfish purposes of theirs by way of favouritism, but in order that they may maintain Allah's law;

(2) The Religion of Right, which Allah has chosen for them, will be openly established, and will suppress all wrong and oppression;

(3) The righteous will live in peace, instead of having to suffer persecution, or leave their homes for the cause of Allah, or practice their faith in secret.

** If this verse was revealed about the time of the Battle of the Ditch (al Khandaq), also called the Battle of the Confederates (al Ahzab), we can imagine the comfort it gave to the Muslims who were besieged in Madinah by a force ten times their number. The Muslims then lived in a state of great suspense and danger, and under arms for days on end. (See 33: 9-20)

The authority they were promised came to them in abundant measures.

Allah's servant

And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this life; nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remebrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.

* The true servants of Allah are those whose hearts are turned to Him morning, noon, and night, and who seek not worldy gain, but Allah's grace, Allah's own Self, His Presence and nearness. "Face" is the symbol of Personality or Self.

Even if they are poor in this world's goods, their society gives far more inward and spiritual satisfaction than worldly grandeur or worldly attraction.

For those who stray from Allah's path. Allah's grace seeks to reclaim them and bring them back to the path. If such one resists, and follows his own lusts, a point is reached when his case becomes hopeless. Allah's Grace does not reach him, and he is abandoned to his pride and insolence.

The Days of Allah
